BLACKsummersnight Album Review When Maxwell decided that music was going to take a back step after 2001, fans never left his side. Through a turbulent change in the R&B world many people had written him off but in true Soul fashion, Maxwell came through after 8 years and delivered an album which through diversity, craftsmanship and pure musicianship through his accompanying band re-opened the gates and showed everyone that an artist on a commercial R&B level can stand up and create music that doesn’t need to follow a trend.
BLACKsummersnight opens itself with truth and honesty talking about “Bad Habits” and finds flow that steadily laces us with a combination of smooth Rhodes keys and sharp trumpet stabs. When a CD of this magnitude has a debut single with the likes of “Pretty Wings” you know you can expect something on another level. Words that speak straight from the heart of experience and love, this is one that needs to be soaked up and given nothing but all of your undivided attention. “Help Somebody” with its title indeed sending us a clear message and “Stop The World” telling us that just that one person can truly stop the world around us, definitely speaks hardball truth.
“Love You”, “Fistful Of Tears”, “Playing Possum” “Phoenix Rise” are positively outstanding start to finish. This is an album that is an essential for the collection. Is Maxwell back? Ladies and Gentlemen, He Never Left!! (5 out of 5)
